Welcome, Maggie Craig, to Avalon Graphics’
Summer Ice Cream Social!!

Maggie Craig

[Cathy of Avalon Graphics] First things first – I have to ask what your
favorite ice cream flavor is:

[Maggie] As long as it’s real Italian ice cream, vanilla, closely followed by rum and raisin.

[Cathy of Avalon Graphics] Maggie, please tell me a little bit about yourself!

I’m Scottish and very proud of it. I grew up in Glasgow and live now in a tiny village in the north of Scotland, which I love, especially when we’re having a heat wave as we are now. It’s so lovely to be able to be outside so much after long months of snow and cold. I write historical novels and historical non-fiction. Before I became a full-time writer I worked as a tourist guide, escorting German visitors around Scotland. It was a great job and very good for honing the story-telling skills. I love reading, writing and photography and am very pleased to have recently bagged a photo of one of our local deer.

Maggie's deer[Cathy] Great photo!! I also love photography!

Just a few curious questions I’m putting to my guests
while we are enjoying our ice cream today:

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Berlin. It’s a fascinating city. I love modern Berlin and am gripped by its wartime and Cold War history.

What inspires you every day and why?

Nature. The view from my window. Trees, green grass, the birds, the hills, the shapes of the clouds as they float past.

One Sweet Moment

What is your favorite food?

New potatoes boiled and served with a knob of butter. It always helps if they come out of one of my neighbours’ fields!

What is your fondest memory?

The births of my two children. Sailing the seven seas with my husband when he was an engineer on massive oil tankers. I never forget how breath-taking South Africa’s Table Mountain looked and how peaceful the albatrosses were which used to accompany us around the Cape of Good Hope.

Gathering Storm

What is your pet peeve and why?

Snobbery of any kind, although especially literary snobbery.

Favorite book in the world?

The Flight of the Heron by DK Broster. It’s the story of a friendship between an English Redcoat and a Highland chieftain during the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and I’ve read it more times than I can remember. I’ve been a willing hostage of the Jacobites ever since I first read it as a child. It inspired me to research and write Jacobite history.

The Jacobite Trilogy

Favorite scent?

Alliage by Estee Lauder.

How did we meet?

On a lucky day for me! We were introduced over the ether by a mutual friend, crime novelist Chris Longmuir.

Maggie, thank you so much for stopping by and sharing with us! I’ve been equally blessed by our friendship – I have ancestral ties to Scotland, as you know, so I always enjoy our chats about your homeland. And you are such a charming person to chat with! I look forward to meeting in person one day! May our relationship, both personal and professional, continue to blossom for years to come!

Hullo Maggie, I think I knew most of this, but not about the ice cream flavours. I have a weakness for rum ‘n’ raisin, too. anne stenhouse
